From Japan, large painting (Kakejiku) on a scroll of "Guanyin Bodhisattva" 觀音 菩薩, in Japanese: "Kannon Bosatsu", dated mid-20th century, signed and sealed (not translated), on silk, framed with brocade, bone scroll rods, 200 x 63cm.
Guanyin Bodhisattva is the traditional Chinese and Buddhist God/Goddess of consolation and grace and is considered immortal. Originally a male deity, but gradually Guanyin was worshiped as a goddess in China. In Japan Kannon was formerly interpreted as sexless.
The characters 観 音 are pronounced in Japanese as "Kannon".
The name of the camera brand Canon refers to this name.
The dimensions of the scroll painting are: 200 x 63cm, the painting is 125 x 41cm on the sides, a classic dark blue /gold floral brocade . A notable feature of this scroll painting is the small ochre/gold brocade borders, which connect the "sky" and "earth". (Heaven and earth are the two pieces of brocade at the very top and bottom of the painting, always larger than the earth of the sky).
The painting is slightly weathered, with some stains near the bottom.
The back of the scroll painting has some stains on the top, i.e. the outside in rolled state.
On one side, the suspension is reinforced with paper tape.
For more information about the deity in China and India, see description of Guan Yin statue in gallery/catalog.
