Shiva's wife is Parvati, who can take the form of Durga and is the personification of the god's energy.
In the Hindu religion, she is worshipped as the one who protects devotees from evil and the miseries of life.
The Goddess Durga, whose name literally translates as “the Inaccessible”, represents the Great Mother par excellence and is the symbol of Manifest Energy.
Since the Universe is born through Energy, it is called “Mother”.
Everyone is born through a mother, therefore, the power that generated the universe is known as Mother, Shakti, Energy or Durga.
The eight weapons that Durga is equipped with are representative of the eight principles of energy.
According to the metaphysics of Yoga, the world is first of all perception: it is perceived by the five senses without which, as we know it, it would not exist.
These five senses are connected to three other great principles, known as Time, Mind and Space.
The five senses, plus these three principles, constitute a total unity and are known as the eight arms of divine power.
Without them we would not be able to relate to the world, nor to know it in the form, therefore relative, in which it is known to us.
